Whenever I get the feeling that my wardrobe is becoming a little dull and I know that I shouldn’t spend any money, I call one of two people: Katelyn or Vanessa. My best friends. In April, it was Vanessa and in June, it was Katelyn. My most recent loan from Katelyn was this cute black and white bird print skirt. I had tried it on a couple times before I specifically asked to borrow it, but it never looked quite right. It was always missing something.

One day in June while attempting to outfit plan for July, I ran across the BCBGMAXAZRIA Bridgete Button Top that I received from Piperlime (I still cannot believe they are closed) a while back. It was in that moment that I had what I like to call, “fashion imprinting.” I just knew that this top was made for Katelyn’s bird print skirt. Without hesitation, I texted Kate to see if she would ship the skirt to me and as you can conclude, she did! Now that I have found a way to make her skirt my own, I’m a tiny bit sad that I have to give it back. But hey, that’s a part of the community closet deal. You can always borrow, but you MUST return. Bye, bye blackbird. I had fun styling you, but it’s time to return you to your home!

P.S. I just wanted to share this little story, because somewhere in today’s society we have been taught that having great style means that you have to have the latest and greatest everything. However, that’s not true. Great style can evolve from random Goodwill trips, shopping your Facebook friend’s closet sale or simply calling a dear friend and asking to borrow something. Something new doesn’t always equate to something “stylish.” So, the next time you find your wardrobe a little boring, I say give a friend a call, borrow something and make it your own.

“Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.”
