Dance, ballet specifically, has played a pretty significant role in life over the years! At the age of three I began my journey in the world of dance and nearly 23 years later I am still exploring, creating and experiencing what I deem the most beautiful form of a physical expression. Granted, I no longer live, sleep, eat and breathe ballet, but I love the fact that I still have the opportunity to stay connected to the single most thing that taught me the importance of true discipline, style, beauty and grace.

Growing up this time of the year was always a bit crazier, as I was likely performing in the Nutcraker! I absolutely loved the month of November, because I spent the majority of every waking moment in either the studio or the theater preparing for the big performance. I so enjoyed wearing my black leotard and pink seamed ballet tights. In fact, that was my standard uniform for almost every class and rehearsal, as I was a part of a ballet company and boy did they not mess around with dress code! To give my look a little flare, I always wore a low bun, simple pearl earrings and clear lip gloss (those days I was anti-lipstick). As I was preparing my look for our yearly date night at the ballet to see the Nutcracker, I was hit with a wave of ballet nostalgia and found myself stylistically inspired by those memories. So, I decided to recreate my standard ballet uniform. Rather than wearing pink tights, I opted for a ballet pink turtleneck sweater. Although bodysuits are instyle, I thought it would be a bit more practical to go with a black skirt. And of course, a classic low bun (with a bang since my hair doesn’t have to be out of my face) paired with big pearls and lipstick. It’s funny how pink and black will forever remind me of my glory days. I love that when I put these colors on together, I immediately feel that desire to dance bigger and greater than I ever have before! Sadly, I’m no longer dancing on stage due to scoliosis, but I love that the memories and influence of ballet will forever be a part of my identity.

If you are looking for something unique to do with your beau or family over the holidays, I encourage you to grab tickets to Ballet Met’s Nutcracker! Opening night was this Friday and runs until Sunday, December 27th. The theater is breathtaking and the performance was perfection. I promise, you will absolutely love it! I’m still dreaming about the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier’s beautiful pas de deux! Ticket information and perfomance times can be found HERE.

“Ballet does not only belong to the elite, it belongs to everyone who seeks to experience the joy of dancing in its finest form.”
