I know I say this pretty regularly here on the blog, but I’m all kinds of excited for today’s post. We are gonna be talking about two things I love dearly…Columbus (GO BUCKS! Cannot believe football season commences tomorrow) and style. However, we won’t be talking these two things as separate entities, but more or less their relationship together.
Did you know that Columbus, OH holds the title as America’s third fashion capital. Yup, you read that right, Third. I’m sure you never thought you would hear such a thing, but Google it and you will discover that I am indeed speaking the truth. What makes Columbus different from NYC and LA is its incredibly laid-back vibe. Honestly, laid-back is the best adjective to describe both the people and culture of Ohio collectively. With a population of approximately 850,000, Columbus is a city that celebrates individuality, creativity and fashion-forwardness, but it does it in the most subtle ways. I am personally convinced that the style of Columbus is classic, yet trendy just like the nature of the city. Embracing the effortless vibe that Ohioans are known for, it’s the attention to detail that makes Columbus’ culture and fashion notable. From strategically placed art galleries, restaurants and shops, Columbus is unpretentious, which I believe is also reflected in the city’s style. It’s the subtle details found in unique color combos, the mixing and matching of prints, accessorizing and layering with statement pieces that really communicates our individual style. We are most definitely interested in making a statement, but not in a flashy way.
You guys know me pretty well, so it’s no surprise to hear that my preferred go-to style aesthetic is effortlessly chic…because it’s indeed effortless. I personally love that Columbus embraces this notion wholeheartedly. I have now lived in four different states and stylistically speaking, Ohio is the state that I have felt most comfortable expressing myself through dress. Granted, it could be because I am a bit older and wiser, but I truly believe the cultural laid-back vibe has further enabled me to better define my personal style which isclassic , affordable and moldable. I love that Old Navy caters to all of those stylistic preferences. With Old Navy, I have the opportunity to express myself through timeless silhouettes that are bold, versatile and on-trend. And speaking of Old Navy, they have been my go-to for more than the majority of my fall staples for this season. This season I truly invested in juxtaposition, feminine fabrics and layering and their wearability from day to night. With Columbus’ unexpectedly cool aesthetic, creating a look that can range from a midday lunch meeting at the Guild House, to grabbing a coffee with a friend at Fox In The Snow, taking a quick gander to the Columbus Museum of Art and concluding the day with a dinner at Lindey’s is really what Columbus is all about. Practicality, ease and efficiency and versatility.
For these two particular looks, I was most interested in showcasing how soft feminine fabrics can be worn during the Fall season. I think the true key to making these lovelies fall appropriate is giving them a bit of extra life with a layering piece. Adding the cardigan and denim jacket instantaneously gives these two pieces a new breath of life. Additionally, to give these looks more of that traditional fall tone, I’ve also included a wine colored crossbody!
Now that you have a little insight on Columbus (and Ohio’s) approach to style, I encourage you to scoot on over to 50 Styles, 50 States to see what other influencers around the country have to say about their respective states style aesthetic. Also, I’d love to see your interpretation of YOUR state’s style by using @OldNavy, #50styles50states and #OldNavyStyle via social media. If you are an Ohioan, I am especially interested to see your look! I’m hoping we are on the same page!
Happy Friday! Oh, and GO BUCKS (I don’t know anything about football, besides that I should have team spirit for THE OHIO STATE.)!
