I must admit, I’m still a HUGE fan of a spring trend from two years ago. Monochromatic color styling. The easiest way to explain monochromatic styling is when an outfit includes similar colors (tints, tones or shades) of a single hue. In essence, you are wearing the same color, but with different variations. Prior to the emergance of this trend in 2012, I had never tried it before and found it extremely difficult to get past the idea of wearing the same color for an entire outfit. However, once I got past my little mental block, I was able to style monochromatically without even thinking twice about it!

This winter (I can’t believe we JUST had our first real snowfall), I’ve developed an obsession for grey. The other day, while doing laundry, I noticed the grey section of my closet has grown tremendously since October, which is weird, because I never in a million years would have considered myself to be a “grey” kinda girl. Just like your taste buds change, I guess your fashion tastes change too. In fact, I know they do! It’s just funny when you actually realize that your taste has changed.

Much like black, I consider grey to be more of a classic, timeless color. Recently, I’ve been on this whole buy unique and timeless kick, as I realize that THE KEY to building a great wardrobe is careful consideration. With that in mind, I try to buy more pieces in colors that I know will stand the test of time. And this is probably the reason why the grey portion of my closet has grown sooo much, sooo quickly!

As I was folding my laundry, it dawned on me that it was time to do a little monochromatic styling with the color grey! As soon as the idea popped into my head, I instantly knew what to pull from my closet to make this fashion vision a reality. I began the look with a French Connection color block sweater that I purchased from TJ Maxx for $30 (originally $80). I really love that the grey of this sweater has a blueish grey hue, rather than plain ole grey. Also, the sleeves are tan and you guys know I have a SERIOUS THING for neutrals. I was then led to a grey lace skirt that I purchased from Banana Republic almost 2 years ago. It’s such a great piece and I hardly ever wear it, but when I do…I remember exactly why I purchased it! It’s classic and classic never fades a way. To highlight the blueish tone of the French Connection sweater, I decided to layer the look with my new favorite Zara blanket scarf. The scarf has a glacier blue undertone that works perfectly with the sweater and the skirt. Also, adding this scarf presented the opportunity to incorporate a little color into the look. Hence, the addition of the brown accessories and the orangy red lip color. To add another shade of grey, as well as tie in the various shades of brown, I decided to complete the look with this double wrap layer coat.

The next time you are wanting to challenge yourself in the fashion department, why don’t you give monochromatic color styling a whirl. It’s a challenge that will leave you feeling accomplished. Oh, and don’t give up after trying it one time! Like I’ve said a million (that word again..ugh) times, trying new fashion trends takes time just like anything else in life. So give a little time and patience. The results will soooooo be worth it.

xoxo, CR
