My obsession with Audrey Hepburn began in June of 2008. I had just competed at Miss Georgia and there was quite a bit of talk about my evening gown being similar to the evening gown that Audrey Hepburn wore in the film Sabrina. While I knew who Audrey Hepburn was, I knew nothing about this Sabrina film. So, out of curiosity, I borrowed the film from some close family friends to see what all of the hype was about. Not only did I discover that my Sherri Hill evening gown had a similar silhouette to Sabrina’s, but I realized that I loved everything about Audrey Hepburn…especially her style. She was incredibly feminine and chic. Often times her wardrobe, both on and off the screen, was simplistically classic. She was all about the neutral tones…black, white, beige and ballet pink. Hepburn never really seemed to care about trends. She liked what she liked and wore it her way! I would venture to say that she was one of the forerunners in defining personal style. I mean, let’s just look at the influence she’s had. Type in “Audrey Hepburn Style” on Pinterest and you’ll find a slew of images of fashionistas recreating a “Hepburn-esque” look.
As many of you may know, Audrey was a ballet dancer prior to becoming an actress. In fact, ballet had a huge impact on her style. Because I too was a ballet dancer, I tend to find myself identifying even more with Hepburn’s ballet-inspired looks. So, in an attempt to create my own rendition of Audrey Hepburn’s style, I decided to bring out the tulle skirt. Nothing says ballerina quite like tulle. Also, the nude color was perfect, as Audrey was all about the neutrals. I then added a black turtleneck. The black turtleneck is ESSENTIAL to recreating her style…it was one of her trademark pieces along with ballet flats, scarves and sunglasses. To put my own spin on this “Hepburn-esque” look, I decided to add black, suede, high heel sling blacks and a statement necklace. Again, I think Audrey would totally approve!
Who are some of your favorite old Hollywood style icons? Oh, and what’s your favorite Audrey Hepburn movie? For me it’s a toss up between Sabrina and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Happy Friday and Happy Easter! xoxo, CR
